DEMOLITION OF ANCIENT MILITARY HOSPITAL
BARCELONA, BARRI DE GRÀCIA
Demolition of the five-storey building of the Old Military Hospital, in Carrer Pere Virgili in Barcelona, carried out in 2018. The main challenge was to minimize the acoustic and environmental impact (dust, projections, gases, installations), since the building was located within a sanitary enclosure with very demanding standards.
First of all the outbuildings were emptied by doing segregation of usable materials and removing all machinery and facilities to select materials and their recycling, as well as the extraction of gases, removal of fiber cement elements and subsequently mechanical demolition with a backhoe equipped with a 22 meter arm which allowed to reach the highest levels (ground floor plus 4 floors high). Throughout the process one was used nebulized water cannon to prevent the spread of dust inside the sanitary enclosure.
Once the demolition was done, the space was converted into a green area with shaded spaces
